World Hunger Day 2021
Food insecurity remains one of the greatest global challenges of our time, as rampant economic disparity perpetuates a dualing world of feast and famine. According to recent statistics published by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations, there are an estimated 690 million people experiencing food scarcity around the globe, with nearly 1 in 10 people suffering extreme food insecurity. These startling figures will continue to rise as the impacts of Covid-19 are felt the world over, adding as many as 132 million more to the already staggering levels of undernourished men, women and children who struggle to meet their basic nutritional needs every day. We are advocates for sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty On 28th May, we came together in support of all those caught in a seemingly endless cycle of want, as representatives from around the globe mark World Hunger Day with a renewed pledge to combat starvation and famine. And while top-down political initiatives are indeed vital, there is still so much to be done on the individual level, and so many ways to make a lasting difference for someone in need. As part of World Hunger Day 2021, Peace Partners is proud to support the work of two long-standing organisations in their continued fight against food scarcity. Food for People The Prem Rawat Foundation’s Food for People Programme has, over the past fifteen years, maintained its dedication to providing healthy, nutritious meals to vulnerable communities across India, Ghana and Nepal. We have all seen the disproportionate impact this pandemic has had on the lives and livelihood of the developing world, as vital supplies are overpowered by even greater demand. India is embroiled in one of the most devastating humanitarian disasters in recent memory, and in desperate need of initiatives like those offered by the Food for People Programme. The Trussell Trust While here in the UK, dedicated members of the Trussell Trust food bank network have been serving local residents for more than two decades, providing emergency support through a network of some 1,200 food centres across the country. The Trussell Trust is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty in our community and to ensuring that no one is left to go hungry in a country of such relative privilege. Help make a difference to those in need The impact of Covid-19 has put humanitarian obligations across the UK and around the globe under immense pressure. The challenge of ensuring food security this year are unlike any in recent memory and will require an equally seismic response. Help us make this the most successful World Hunger Day on record, as we mark the start of a new chapter in global giving and with it a brighter future for all.
